Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is often times seen as one of the most complex but well-loved poker variations. It’s a variation that, even more than regular Omaha poker, invites action from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once irrelevant variation, has increased in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha/8 starts just like a normal game of Omaha. Four cards are given out to each player. A round of betting follows in which gamblers can bet, check, or fold. Three cards are handed out, this is referred to as the flop. A further round of wagering ensues. Once all the gamblers have either called or folded, another card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting follows at which point the river card is flipped. The entrants will need to put together the best high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is the point where some entrants can get confused. Contrasted to Texas Hold ‘Em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi-low the player must use precisely 3 cards from the board, and exactly two hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot could be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."
A high hand is just what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It is the identical concept in almost all poker games.
A low hand is more complicated, but certainly free’s up the action. When determining a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be put together, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest possible hand. The low hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand wins half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the high hand wins the complete pot.
It may seem complex at the outset, after a few hands you will be able to pick up on the basic subtleties of play simply enough. Seeing as you have players betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as so many cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better provides an amazing range of betting choices and because you have numerous players battling for the high hand, along with many battling for the low hand. If you like a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to compete in Omaha 8 or better.
