Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is commonly seen as one of the most complicated but well-loved poker games. It’s a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the chief reason why a once obscure variation, has grown in acceptance so quickly.

Omaha 8 or better begins just like a regular game of Omaha. 4 cards are dealt to each player. A sequence of betting ensues in which players can bet, check, or fold. 3 cards are handed out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering happens. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is flipped on the turn. a further round of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The players will need to put together the strongest high and low 5 card hands using the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a number of players often get baffled. Contrasted to Hold’em, where the board can be every player’s hand, in Omaha hi low the player has to use precisely three cards on the board, and precisely two cards from their hand. No more, not a single card less. Unlike regular Omaha, there are two ways a pot might be won: the "high hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is exactly how it sounds. It’s the best hand out of everyone’s, it doesn’t matter if it is a straight, flush, full house. It’s the very same concept in just about all poker games.

The low hand is more complex, but certainly opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the worst hand that might be made, with the worst being A-2-3-4-5. Considering that straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the lowest value hand possible. The lower hand is any five card hand (unpaired) with an 8 and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as does the high hand. When there’s no lower hand available, the higher hand wins the complete pot.

It may seem complex initially, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the fundamental nuances of the game simply enough. Since you have individuals wagering for the low and wagering for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha/8 provides an exciting range of wagering possibilities and seeing that you have several individuals battling for the high hand, along with several trying for the low. If you enjoy a game with a considerable amount of outs and actions, it’s not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha 8 or better.
