Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha/8 or better) is frequently viewed as one of the most complex but popular poker games. It is a game that, even more than regular Omaha poker, aims for play from every level of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so amazingly.
Omaha 8 or better begins like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering follows where gamblers can wager, check, or drop out. Three cards are given out, this is called the flop. One more round of wagering ensues. After all the gamblers have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. an additional sequence of betting happens at which point the river card is revealed. The entrants will have to make the strongest high and low 5 card hands based on the board and hole cards.
This is where some players often get flustered. Unlike Hold’em, where the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha Hi-Lo the player must utilize exactly three cards on the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. Not a single card more, not a single card less. Contrary to regular Omaha, there are 2 ways a pot can be won: the "high hand" or the "low hand."
A high hand is exactly what it sounds like. It’s the best hand out of every player’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house. It is the same notion in just about all poker games.
The lower hand is more complicated, but really opens up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes do not count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that could be put together, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Because straights and flushes do not count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The low hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and lower. The low hand takes half of the pot, as just like the higher hand. When there’s no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.
It may seem difficult at the start, after a couple of rounds you will be able to pick up on the fundamental subtleties of play simply enough.
