Omaha Hi-Lo (also known as Omaha 8 or better) is often times viewed as one of the most difficult but popular poker variations. It is a game that, even more than normal Omaha poker, invites play from all levels of players. This is the main reason why a once invisible variation, has grown in popularity so rapidly.

Omaha/8 begins exactly like a regular game of Omaha. Four cards are handed out to each player. A round of wagering ensues in which players can wager, check, or fold. Three cards are given out, this is referred to as the flop. A further sequence of wagering ensues. Once all the players have in turn called or dropped out, a further card is revealed on the turn. Another sequence of wagering follows and then the river card is flipped. The gamblers will need to put together the best high and low five card hands based on the board and hole cards.

This is the point where a few players can get flustered. Contrasted to Texas Holdem, in which the board can make up everyone’s hand, in Omaha hi/lo the player has to use precisely three cards from the board, and exactly 2 hole cards. No more, no less. Contrary to normal Omaha, there are two ways a pot may be won: the "higher hand" or the "lower hand."

A high hand is just how it sounds. It is the strongest hand out of everyone’s, whether that is a straight, flush, full house, etc. It is the very same concept in just about all poker games.

The lower hand is more complicated, but really free’s up the play. When figuring out a low hand, straights and flushes don’t count. the lowest hand is the weakest hand that can be made, with the lowest value being A-2-3-4-5. Seeing as straights and flushes don’t count, A-2-3-4-5 is the smallest value hand possible. The lower hand is any 5 card hand (unpaired) with an eight and smaller. The lower hand takes half of the pot, as just like the high hand. When there is no low hand available, the higher hand takes the entire pot.

While it seems complex at first, after a couple of hands you will be able to get the basic subtleties of play with ease. Since you have individuals betting for the low and betting for the high, and seeing as such a large number of cards are being used at the same time, Omaha 8 or better offers an exciting range of betting possibilities and owing to the fact that you have numerous players trying for the high, along with several battling for the low. If you love a game with all kinds of outs and actions, it is not a waste of your time to participate in Omaha hi/lo.
